Buying Tools and Materials

WHAT TOOLS DO YOU NEED?

If you move out away from the city and are planning to "get away from it all", you are going to need tools, lots of good quality tools. It seems that you, when you live way out, or you are off grid, if you are on a Farm or a Ranch, you are either always, and I mean always, building or fixing something. You will need a large tool box with many types of good quality tools, screws, nuts, bolts, nails......

If you are going to own animals, anything from a dog to an elephant, you are going to need fencing tools, yes, even if the fencing is already up when you move to the place. Horses, cows, sheep and goats can be hard on fencing. Not only should you have a good grade Post Hole Digger, but also the best Post Pounder you can find. Of course you will need fencing parts on hand at all times....because of course your animals will not let you know, before your next trip to town, that they plan to break then fencing.

Your hammer will be your friend, maybe your best friend... Buy a good hammer and you will find you will not only own it for years, it will serve you well. In fact, buy at least two hammers. I wish I had a nickle for every time I have heard "Do you know where my hammer is?", "Have you seen my hammer?", or "Where is my %^@# hammer!!!???" Of course, you will also need nails in 27 sizes.

Screw Drivers, both single sized and electric, are very necessary. Not only that, but if you see a size you do not own (driver or drill bits) buy them. Houses, additions, sheds, barns, nestboxes, saddle stands and on and on and on, are stronger and will be more stable if screwed together and not nailed.

Wrenches, pliers, wire cutters, more pliers, needle nose pliers, small pliers, pipe cutters, saws, miter saws, table saws, the truth is....if they are selling it in the Hardware Store, you probably need two or three.

And do not forget to buy plumbing tools. If you live way out you can bet that things will leak, break and back up long after hours. Getting someone to come out after hours in the city is one thing, waaaaaaaay out, even harder.

What tools do you need? Any they sell and then some.

ALONG WITH THE TOOLS

That stuff you will need around a farm or ranch that comes in handy and might be the exact thing you will need.....

DUCT TAPE
WIRE, MANY TYPES AND THICKNESSES
PLASTIC ZIP TIES
GORILLA GLUE
A GLUE GUN AND GLUE
A STAPLE GUN AND STAPLES
A COUPLE OF GOOD GRADE TARPS
WOOD SCRAPS
CONCRETE BLOCKS (just a few to grab now and again for odd jobs)
ROPE
A GOOD WELL STOCKED FIRST AID KIT

more to come.....

IN YOUR POCKETS

There are just some items you need in your pockets when you live out on land...like a small flashlight. Almost everyone carries a pocket knife...no? Well, they sure used to, and when you are out on land or on a farm or ranch, you must. A good multi tool that opens into a pliers and has all the little screw driver heads is a wonderful useful thing to always have with you too. A good lighter or matches. A key set that includes keys for everything from the truck to the tractor to the shed door. That way when you need them you have them, there is no going back to the house for them.

I own and breed rabbits. I carry a rubber washer in my pocket cause it always seems like, when I am in the biggest hurry, THAT is when I loose one off the water bottle lid and need one straight away.

Check Book and cash!! You are always gonna need to run to town for something around the place, even if the trip is next week.

BUILDING MATERIALS AND BUILDING

Goat Construction Crew

If you are building, anything, anything fROm a house to a chicken coupe, build it right. Buy the best building materials you can afford and wait a week or a month if you need to to do it right.

Your buildings, even if just a small chicken coupe, need to be strong enough and solid enough to provide shelter and warmth for you and or your animals.

We live in NW SD where the wind blows all year and blows hard and straight on with no trees to block it. Without our studs/joist being placed correctly, in fact, closer then most areas would need in the USA, our buildings would not hold up. I for one do not want to get up one morning to find my chicken coupe, barn or house has blown over because I cheated the structure and left out a few good grade boards.

Deron just bought two of these new clamps in this photo for making the posts to build our barn. It always seem a person needs one more tool, or two more boards.

PLANS AND IDEAS

In today's world a person can find finished plans and ideas for about any structure. There are many house, cabin, barn, chicken coupe, lean tu, or any other plans you might need on the Internet.

There is no need to pay someone to draw up plans for you. If you do not know how to search the Internet ask some computer savvy soul to help you.

GUNS ~ PISTOLS AND RIFLES

Your guns are also your tools and if you are going to live out, you are going to need these tools also. Keep a good amount of ammo for each of these tools and keep your guns clean and ready for use.

Much more coming, but the bottom line is.....buy tools and buy the best tools and or building supplies you can afford.
